CEREC Crowns: What’s the big deal?

As consumers, we hear and know specific buzzwords when it comes to dentistry.  Implants, crowns, caps, cleaning, fillings, cavities and so on.  But buzzwords that many don’t know are ‘CEREC Crowns’ and the amazing technology that comes with it.

At Goldstein Dental, we feel that being at the forefront of dental technology is an absolute necessity for our patients.  Not only does it provide highest level product for our patients but also the highest level care possible.

Let’s return to the ultimate crown machine!  CEREC Crowns are made using CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing) technology to create your 100% Porcelain (tooth colored) crown.  Does CAD or CAM sound familiar to you?  These two processes are used every day by architects, engineers, and drafters to create drawings and blueprints to make goods and buildings.  Dr. Goldstein and Dr. Boheen use this technology in a similar manner to make your customized porcelain crown.

Old, archaic porcelain fused to metal crowns (PFM’s) are prone to showing a silver margin at the gumline as the gum begins to recede (as seen in the above picture) or simply fracture.

In your crown appointment, the doctor will clean and prep your tooth for the crown.  They will then use the computer and attached camera to take a digital impression of your teeth.  With that impression, the need for a physical impression with goopy material, uncomfortable impression trays in your mouth and multiple appointments are all eliminated.  The days of sensitive temporary crowns are finally over.  The camera is sending and updating pictures of your mouth straight to the computer.

Once the image is captured (as seen above), the doctor will then use the computer to design your perfect crown.  The crown is then milled in office with one of our CEREC mills out of a pure porcelain block.

After this process is completed, the doctor  permanently cements your perfectly fitted crown to your tooth (as shown below).

The entire process is completed in under two hours!  Most of the time for the patient is spent in the chair simply waiting for the crown to be completed – so feel free to bring a book, music, or even take a nap.   CEREC crowns are made with incredible accuracy and precision to look and feel exactly like a real tooth.  Call today to set up your next crown appointment with us at 716-635-4720!
